The Co-chairs of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Representative Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) said in a joint-statement that they’re engaged in “serious discussions” on plans for the committee, including rules for their operations, schedules for meetings, staffing and discussions of other issues. Committee members are reviewing the deficit reduction work that many others have engaged in recently. Some of the members have met constituents in town hall meetings to discuss their efforts and budget priorities. The first meeting of the committee is expected soon after Congress reconvenes after Labor Day.

Sen. Jon Kyl (R): The No. 2 Republican in the Senate behind Mitch McConnell, a member of the Finance Committee.
Rep. Xavier Becerra (D): A senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, served on President Obama’s debt commission.
Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D): Participated in debt talks led by Vice President Joe Biden earlier this year, ranking Democrat on the Budget Committee.
Sen. John Kerry (D): Former presidential candidate, extensive expertise on national security matters, member of the Finance Committee.
Rep. Dave Camp (R): Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, served on Obama’s debt commission
Rep. Fred Upton (R): Chair of the the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Sen. Max Baucus (D): Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, served on Obama’s debt commission.
Sen. Rob Portman (R): Former White House budget director in the Bush administration, member of the Budget Committee.
Sen. Pat Toomey (R): Member of the Senate Budget and Banking committees, former president of the anti-tax Club for Growth.
Rep. James Clyburn (D): Third-ranking Democrat in the House and veteran of the Appropriations Committee, participated in the Biden debt reduction talks.
Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R): Chair of the House Republican Conference, served on President Obama’s debt commission
Sen. Patty Murray (D): Chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, member of the Budget and Appropriations committees.
